Top Utusan editor attacks Malaysiakini

Tan Kian Khim: Actually, ( Utusan Malaysia editor) Zaini Hassan is quite right in saying that Malaysiakini is the source of the 'problems' in Malaysia today - problems for Utusan and its political masters Umno, that is.

Largely because of Malaysiakini , the people are far better informed and equipped to reject the endless streams of propaganda and vitriol spewed by Utusan -Umno. Malaysiakini (and other independent Internet media) played a huge role in the political tsunami of 2008.

As a direct result, Utusan and the rest of the Umno-controlled 'mainstream' media are finding that it is becoming nearly impossible to peddle their lies to the public, and are suffering from falling circulation, revenues and a complete loss of credibility, much to the incomprehension and frustration of Zaini.

Zaini Hassan is the Ibrahim Ali of the media: an utterly contemptible and irrational demagogue without a shred of journalistic or personal integrity to his name. It is fitting that he remain editor of Utusan until its inevitable demise.

Gen2: When these people start going into hysterics and name-calling, then you know that they are getting desperate. Newspapers are suppose to tell and sell the truth. If what you are selling is not the truth, people will stop buying your wares. Plain and simple.

Phra Ong Chao: Utusan Malaysia should bear the words ‘Untuk Ahli Umno Sahaja' (For Umno members only), like the papers of other political parties such as Harakah, The Rocket and Suara Keadilan .

Isn't it clear as daylight that Utusan is shirking its responsibility as a newspaper for the rakyat as it is incredibly partial to Umno? Its top editor attends a BN convention and suggests ways to attack political parties opposed to the BN (we can't call them the opposition as the convention was held in Selangor where BN is the opposition).

Imagine an editor of the New York Times attending a Republican convention and attacks the Democrats in such a way or an editor of The Times attending a Conservatives party convention and attacks the Labour party in the manner of Utusan .

But then again, Utusan cannot be equated with mainstream papers of civilised nations, but rather with the now defunct Der Stümer .

Saengch: It's called "projection" in psychology when a "frustrated media person" calls another "frustrated media person". Psychological projection is the unconscious act of denial of a person's own attributes, thoughts and emotions, which are then ascribed to other people. It is the fundamental mechanism by which we keep ourselves uninformed about ourselves.

Paleo-anthropologically speaking, this faculty probably had survival value as a self-defense mechanism when homosapiens' intellectual capacity to detect deception in others improved to the point that the only sure hope to deceive was for deceivers to be self-deceived, and therefore behave as if they were being truthful.

Unfortunately, human beings have done great harm labouring under the delusions of projection. This is especially true for historical cases of projection between ethnic or cultural groups, for example, in apartheid or Nazism. See 'projection' in wikipedia.

KayKay: The Utusan editor seems to be under some delusion that BN is a sacred cow. He does not see where party politics ends and good government begins. Imagine the Washington Post editor raving and ranting against the New York Times because it carries stories critical of the Obama administration and the Democratic Party?

Ngawangjimpa: Zaini's contradictory views just don't gel. He has been fanning untold racial commentaries in Utusan Malaysia , and yet has the audacity to push the blame of Malaysia's current problems to Malaysiakini .

He said news in cyberspace are full of lies and, ironically, he called on the BN to recruit more cyber-troopers and BN-friendly bloggers to attack opposition websites.

Yuvan: So Zaini Hassan thinks that if Malaysiakini was ‘controlled' or better still ‘closed down', then all the political, economic and social problems that this country is plagued with will be solved forever. I am not at all surprised that a senior journalist with such extremely shallow and illogical thinking can only be found in Utusan Malaysia .

It is so absurd that he believes "Internet is full of lies and slander and fanning racial sentiments". To prove himself absolutely wrong, all that he has to do is to go back to his own base - Utusan Malaysia itself - and read those "heaps of racial sentiment rubbish" written by its "small brain" writers who are ever happy "to live like frogs in the well".

Malaysianilove: There is a Chinese saying that "only the real thief will call another a thief first". I believe that Malaysiakini has been impartial and independent in its news reporting. Here, I've seen saw so many times pro-BN news and pro-opposition news. Even the fact that this report is published shows the selflessness and independence of Malaysiakini .

Utusan has been ruthless in flaming racism and publishing bias news that have aggravated the wounds of inequality in this country. It has total disregard to the sentiments and contribution of the non-Malays in making Malaysia what it is today. Armed with such supremacist thinking, they have neither religious values nor professionalism.

KJ Lim: Malaysiakini did not become famous for no reason. They knew it well but still keep on denying and still denying. I read a couple of newspapers included those so-called mainstream media (MSM) daily. However, I found news in Malaysiakini are more neutral than MSM.

Malaysiakini has both sides bad or good stories reported and we, readers make our conclusion. We are not in 70s or 80s where information was hardly to be found and received. What kind of thinking mind does he (Zaini) have? When sales is not good, he blames the other who is making promising progress?

Multi Racial: Malaysiakini becoming popular is because of people like Zaini Hassan and the company he works for are not doing their job. They are the one who are fanning racial sentiment. If they stop doing that and report the truth without fear or favour, more will read their paper.

At this moment, I do not want to have anything to do with this irresponsible paper. I am very sure it is because it is run by irresponsible people who only sole purpose there is to keep their job by ‘angkat(ing)' their master in Umno.

Gandhi: If a newspaper or an online news portal is gaining popularity, it is because of their transparency in reporting. Utusan is bent upon maligning non-Malays and other sensitive issues. Since it's an Umno paper, Zaini & Co has the carte blanche to write anything and get away with it.

One has to count the number suits filed against them left, right and centre. It's bewildering. Zaini has to report issues fairly and not slanted, as the public are more discerning and mature enough to analyse Utusan 's brazen reporting. If Pakatan Rakyat took power at the federal level, I bet Utusan would be cautious because they have no government protection.

Kgen: Malaysiakini must be doing something right to incur the ire of this Umno hardcore and Malay supremacist.
