A plane from budget carrier AirAsia made an emergency landing today at Penang airport in the north of the country after experiencing engine problems, a news report said.

The Macau-bound plane had taken off from Penang International Airport, but the pilot soon noticed that one of the plane's two engines was experiencing problems, the Star newspaper said, citing unnamed sources for its report.

The control tower was told and the plane landed safely, the paper said.

Authorities and technical staff were trying to determine the cause of the problem.

The passengers, who were all unharmed, were later taken to their destination on another flight.
