Police have recorded a statement from one opposition leader and will interview another two with regard to the Barisan Alternatif statement issued on the Petaling Selatan clashes which left six dead.

DAP secretary-general Kerk Kim Hock said today police met him at the Melaka DAP office on Saturday during which they recorded a statement from him.

"The meeting lasted 45 minutes and they told me that the recording of my statement was a result of a police report lodged by the police themselves over the joint statement issued by BA leaders on the Petaling Selatan clashes," said Kerk.

Selangor chief police officer Nik Ismail Nik Yusof said last Wednesday that police lodged a report against two opposition parties for claiming that the death toll of the communal clashes in Petaling Selatan could be higher than the figure given by the police.

According to the national news agency Bernama , Nik Ismail told a news conference that the parties, PAS and Keadilan, "must prove their claim".

He was quoted as saying that Keadilan and PAS had been distributing "pamphlets" at Kampung Taman Medan off Jalan Kelang Lama, Petaling Selatan, disputing the death toll figure given by police, which is six.

The two parties have denied distributing any pamphlets in the troubled area.

Appointments set

Parti Rakyat Malaysia president Dr Syed Husin Ali, when contacted, said that police had already gotten in touch with him on the same matter.

Syed Husin said police from Petaling Jaya will meet him at the PRM headquarters this Thursday.

An aide to Keadilan president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail confirmed that she, too, had been contacted by the police and an appointment set for sometime later this week.
