10.00am: MIC member B Purusothaman said the only way for the party to regain support of the Indian community in Hulu Selangor was for party president S Samy Vellu to step down immediately.

Samy Vellu had previously promised to step down only after 14-months. Purusothaman is a staunch supporter of former party deputy president S Subramaniam, who is Samy Vellu’s arch rival.  

NONE 11.20am: Dr Halili Rahmat ( left in pix ), a close associate of Anwar Ibrahim, quits PKR and is to join Umno. He was the Hulu Selangor PKR division treasurer.

Former PKR secretary-general Salehuddin Hashim was present at the press conference held at a hotel in Petaling Jaya.

BN deputy chief Muhyiddin Yassin had hinted yesterday that a 'major defection' from PKR would happen. 

11.30am: Independent candidate VS Chandran is scheduled to call a press conference in Kuala Kubu Baru to announce his withdrawal from the by-election.

NONE 11.50am: PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Akin ( centre in pix ) lodges report with Election Commission over slanderous banners and billboards, among others, a doctored picture portraying Zaid Ibrahim consuming alcohol.

12.05pm: In Kuala Kubu Baru, PKR information chief Latheefa Koya brushes off Halili's defection. She said Halili has shown he has no principles on account of defecting after being overlooked as the by-election candidate. 

"They normally wait for by-elections to jump ship, when the price will be higher."

NONE 12.20pm: As promised on the front page of Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia , the Gerakan Anti-PKR ( right ) blog today published a picture of Zaid Ibrahim allegedly clutching a bottle of whiskey.

No details about the picture - believed to be doctored - were provided in the blog posting.

The blog post, citing PKR vice-president Azmin Ali's challenge for detractors to 'prove' their claims against Zaid, insinuates it had called Azmin's bluff.

1.15pm: Independent candidate VS Chandran  withdraws from the Hulu Selangor race. 

2.00pm: Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Deputy Minister Tan Lian Hoe to give out aid to the Orang Asli community at Desa Anggerik, Serendah.

3.00pm: Selangor police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said 19 reports have been lodged in relations to the Hulu Selangor by-election thus far. This includes two cases of vehicle vandalism, four cases of assault, two cases of violating election laws and one case involving the Minor Offences Act.

He adds that the police were vigilantly scrutinising campaign activities and have noted that some ceramah were being held without a permit. Organisers have been urged to apply for a permit to avoid any problems and he also warns speakers to stay away from ‘sensitive issues’. 

5.00pm: PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Zaid Ibrahim's wife will attend hi-tea with women leaders at the party's operation centre in Kuala Kubu Baru.

5.15pm: Zaid Ibrahim in walkabout at Rasa town.

6.15pm: "I am a mousedeer in between elephants," said independent candidate Johan Mohd Diah during the launch of his operation centre at his home in Sungai Tengi, Hulu Bernam.

Johan is confident of winning at least 15 percent of the votes, especially among rural voters. 

7.30pm: Heavy rain in Hulu Selangor.

8.00pm PKR candidate Zaid Ibrahim, together with Pakatan Rakyat's top leaders, is scheduled to give speech at Kampung Dato’ Harun, Serendah in his campaign trail before moving on to Kampung Melayu Rasa (10pm) and Ampang Pecah, Kuala Kubu Baru (11pm).

9.00pm Former Hulu Selangor PKR treasurer Dr Halili Rahmat, who resigned from the party this morning, will join former Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Isa Samad and Rural Development Minister Shafie Apdal at a ceramah in Bandar Sungai Buaya.

9.45pm: There is a sea of umbrellas in Ampang Pecah as hundreds brave the rain to attend a PKR ceramah.

Sri Setia assemblyperson Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad tells the the crowd that Zaid is a changed man and would never touch alcohol again. He claims that Zaid had already performed the haj. 

10.00pm: TV3 to air interview with BN candidate P Kamalanathan.

10.15pm: Rain subsides at Kalumpang. PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang and PKR supreme council member N Gobalakrishnan are among speakers. 

10.30pm: Halili appears on a BN stage in Bandar Sungai Buaya.

"As a sane person, I must be on the side of right... I don't have any political ambitions, I just want to continue serving as a doctor for the good of the people and Malaysia."

10.35pm: Hours after launching his operation centre, independent candidate Johan Mohd Diah withdraws his candidacy, leaving PKR's Zaid Ibrahim to slug it out against BN's P Kamalanathan in a straight fight.

10.50pm: PKR de facto leader doesn't think much of Johan's decision to withdraw from the race.

"This fight is between Pakatan Rakyat and Umno-Barisan Nasional. MIC is just riding pillion. We will soldier on."

11.05pm: Met at a ceramah in Kalumpang, Zaid refuses to comment about online allegations that he was involved in horse racing abroad.

11.55pm: Speaking to reporters in Ampang Pecah, Zaid said he used to own race horses when he was in Umno but not anymore. He also denied gambling.
