DAP chairperson Lim Kit Siang today called on members of Parliament to declare Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister M Kayveas persona non grata in the Dewan Rakyat for his "obnoxious locker-room language" unless he makes "a full apology and unqualified contrition" for his remarks.

Lim said that Senator Kayveas' usage of the phrases "one-night stand" and "two-night stand" when answering questions in Parliament on Wednesday had "demeaned and degraded" the institution.

Kayveas, who is also People's Progressive Party (PPP) president, had used the term "one-night stand" to describe the relationship between PAS and DAP during elections.

"They (PAS) will not accept DAP's narrow thinking. Their relationship is based on a one-night stand during the by-elections," he said.

Stern lesson

Lim said in a statement today that the bigger issue surrounding Kayveas' behaviour was how the Dewan Rakyat could "allow a Senator to demean and degrade it with such locker-room language without any sense of outrage whatsoever".

He added that MPs were raising "fundamental questions about their own credibility and relevance" if they did not administer a "stern lesson" to Kayveas for his choice of words.

Deputy Speaker Muhammad Abdullah had asked Kayveas to state his intention in using the phrase "one-night stand".

"What I mean is their relationship is not continuous. If one-night stand is not acceptable, I'll use two-night stand," said Kayveas to laughter from the floor.

Lim said that Kayveas was "preening on his cleverness" while MPs did nothing to retrieve "their honour and dignity".

If Kayveas is declared persona non grata , he will be barred from entering the Dewan Rakyat.
