Prime Minister Najib Razak arrived in Sibu tonight for a one-day visit to Sibu town and its outskirts, including the Ninth Brigade Infantry camp.

Najib, who was accompanied by his wife Rosmah Mansor, was met on arrival at the Sibu airport, by Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, his deputy Dr George Chan, other state dignitaries and community leaders.

He will begin his hectic itinerary with walkabouts at the Sungai Merah bazaar and SK Perbandaran No 3 before proceeding to the Malay Union Club (MUC) in Kampung Bandong here.

Later, he attends a luncheon at Rascom Camp and presents Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) to Sarawak ex-servicemen.

The Rascom concept was officially abolished 15 years ago after it had successfully achieved its objective of combating the communist insurgents through a joint civilian, police and military establishment, which was announced by his late father, Abdul Razak Hussein in Kuching in March 1972.

The prime minister will then stop over to present prizes of a local tournament at the Sibu Golf Club before visiting the Laila Taib College at Jalan Airport Lama, here to present scholarship to some students.

He will also visit SK St Mary's new building construction site at Jalan Awang Ramli Amit, here.

Rosmah to meet Sibu BN women leaders

In the evening he will attend the inauguration and installation of the first executive committee of the Sibu Culture Art Association here, being helmed by its president Lau Cheng Kiong.

Najib will end his one-day visit, the second to Sibu this year, with a meet-the-people session at the Sibu Town Square, where the ‘One Malaysia Cultural Night’ is being held.

Meanwhile in a separate programme, Rosmah is scheduled to meet with Sibu BN women leaders at the RH Hotel.
