Dont back down on govt plans, PM tells BN parties
Government decisions are not made by only one component party in the ruling coalition and therefore all member parties must stand together to support and defend those decisions, said Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad today.
He said mutual understanding among Barisan Nasional component parties is important if a government policy is to be implemented successfully.
"We must remember that a decision by the BN government is not the decision of one component party. It is not true for people to allege that only one component party is calling the shots while the rest just have to follow and nod their heads," he stressed.
All the decisions are debated and discussed in details first to determine their effects on the future of different races, people and the country before they are finalised, said Mahathir who has been the country's Prime Minister for 21 years.
"This is the time when the component parties will 'quarrel' among themselves until one final, unanimous decision is reached," he told some 2,000 Gerakan delegates and members at the opening of the party's 31st National Delegates Conference in Kuala Lumpur this morning.
