A two-hour roundtable discussion featuring Pakatan Rakyat and several non-governmental organisations today called for the Zionist regime to be charged in the International Criminal Court and ordered to pay full compensation to the victims involved in the attack on the Gaza aid ships.

In a five-point resolution, they also pushed for the Israel to return the humanitarian aid seized from the Freedom Flotilla, which is meant for the Palestinians in Gaza.

The resolution also called on international bodies to ensure that restrictions imposed on Gaza by Israel, with the assistance of Egypt, are removed.

"I suggest that the Muslim month of Rejab (between June and July) be made Aid Palestine Month, where we fight for the rights of the people by maximising our understanding of the issues involved," Nasharuddin said,

He explained that Rejab would be an ideal month for the event because it was the month when Prophet Muhammad rose to heaven to meet Allah.

"On his way there, he stopped at Al-Aqsa (in Palestine). That is why I think Rejab is significant for this," he said.

Nasharuddin also said that the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which has not stated its stand on attack, and should come forth in tackling the issue.

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said that the government should condemn the Israeli attack, especially since it was done in international waters.

"We need to push (US President) Barrack Obama to fulfill his promises to implement new foreign policies in order to solve this long-standing problem," Lim said.

Tenaganita chairperson,Irene Fernandez, said that the government must recognise refugees to be able to help the ones from Palestine.

"When the government does not recognise refugees, they cannot work and they cannot survive. We need to recognise them as Malaysia has signed the United Nations Convention on Refugees to give them recognition, so that they can live here and not be in fear of their painful life in Palestine.

irene fernandez interview 251108 02 "If Malaysia is committed to the Palestinians struggle, we must ensure the recognition of the refugees as well," Fernandez said, adding that Malaysia, as a member of the Human Rights Council, should take stern action on the Israeli attack on the aid convoy.

"Israel has violated human rights and we should continuously urge the UN to be stronger. Secretary-general Ban Ki Moon cannot just say the UN is concerned... it should impose a sanction on Israel," she said.

She suggested that the Palestinians form a tribunal, so that they can speak to defend themselves."

We should have a major tribunal and let's take the government to task on this," she added.

Others who expressed their anger over the Israeli attack included NGOs such as Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia, Jemaah Islamiah Malaysia, Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia, Abolish ISA Movement and Youth4Change.
