Embattled Samy to overhaul leadership structure

Confused: S Samy Vellu is talking about making party changes after two years have passed since the political tsunami of March 8, 2008? MIC appears to be moving in snail pace when it comes to addressing pertinent issues.

Doesn't Samy know that the only major revamp that MIC needs is for him to step down? He is obviously in denial. Look at other leaders - when things go wrong, a noble leader will take responsibility by stepping down. Take, for example, Japan's prime minister. Samy is acting like MIC belongs to him.

KSN: Samy, what about your leadership as MIC precedent for 30-over years? Is not the pathetic plight of the Indian community you claim to represent, proof enough of their betrayal by you and the MIC? You have the cheek to take action against other junior-level leaders. What about the slogans of your government regarding leadership by example? They followed their leader - you - and you betrayed them.

Or is this restructure another one of your devious, dubious plans to make your son Vell Paari MIC president? You have absolutely no credibility to criticise or question their leadership or their performance. What you did not do in 30 years, you are going to do in six months?

Cala: How can Samy Vellu save a party when he is the cause of its destruction? MIC has for decades been under the thumb of Samy Vellu and has slowly degenerated into a small outfit inconsequential to the performance of the BN in any election.

The source of problem of MIC has to do with the party president and the way he manages the party members/party affairs. Instead of grooming potential successors, those who are capable are systematically sidelined, if not outright sacked.

Over time, for reason of their own interests, members became submissive to the party leadership wherein the voices of conscience are suppressed. Similar to any corporate turn- around situation, a change of leadership is a must. It should begin by placing the horse before the cart - that is, replacing the president.

Let us argue Samy Vellu's position for re-election as MIC president from a transaction cost economics (TCE) perspective. Simply put, Samy Vellu is due to renew his contract (if elected) when his current term expires. In a way, given his own personal characteristics, he is an asset specific to MIC.

But his usefulness depends on how MIC members perceive him. If he has been contributing positively towards the well-being of members, his duty is required and he can look forward for a another term of fruitful tenure, a situation called "parity at the renewal interval is upset". No contender can shake him.

Otherwise, he has to make way for other bidders to the post. In sum, hence, the sad thing about Samy Vellu is, he has not been investing in himself to make himself more aligned with the demands of the party. In the absence, his exit is imminence.

Gandhi: Samy is still taking the delegates for fools. He has said this plan for change umpteen times, and there's been no change at all. The same branch chairpersons are entrenched all over the country.

First and foremost, Samy should step down. All MIC delegates should also retire and let new and intelligent young fellows take over the branches and divisions. With this clown around, there will never be changes.

What is he going to change? It's all about buying time and deceiving the MIC zombie-like members. For once, the delegates should show him that they have the intelligence to throw Samy out for good.

Doc: I think the post of president of MIC should be abolished and in its place a new post that goes by the name ‘Emperor of MIC' should be created. The emperor has the sole authority to appoint or sack any MIC member. No more elections are needed to choose party leaders as it a waste of time and money. In addition, money politics can be curbed.

The emperor will rule till his demise, and on his death bed will appoint his successor. All rebellious factions or discontented individuals in MIC will be dealt with severely and quick. The emperor will have a deputy who will be picked based on blood ties, not political ability.

Hey, wait a minute isn't this MIC in its current form with Emperor Samy Velly heading MIC and his son Vell Paari in second command?

Muniandy: It's time that we appeal directly to the government to have a department /institute/forum to take care of Indians' welfare. Don't waste time rebuilding political parties like MIC, IPF, Malaysia Makkal Sakti Party, and so on. It has been proven that the Indian political parties can only carry flags for self-interests. It's high time we appeal for the government to give Indians the fishing rod instead of fish, like what we had in Hulu Selangor by-election.

Whatever re-branding MIC's going to undertake, it's the same old vehicle painted with new colours that's going to be on street.

Patriot: This joker has now another tactic to stall his departure and this is another debacle like the rebranding exercise. I am told many of the MIC branches have the names of Indian residents as party members in a praticular area or housing estate without their knowledge. This is how they make up the numbers. These guys are as filthy as they come.

The Indians should check if this is so and sue MIC and its arrogant leader for using their names without any written consent. There could also be dead members and dead residents in that list.

CA: In his usual arrogance self, Samy can only see faults in the party's machinery but himself. He's just a heavy burden to the ‘Make Indians Cry' party, the Indians, and fellow component parties in the BN. He should just go away gracefully.
