The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) today called on the Transport Ministry to reappoint a workers' representative to the Port Klang Authority Board with immediate effect to look after the interest of 20,000 port workers.

Its vice-president A Balasubramaniam said MTUC was concerned that there were no workers' representative on the board in the last three years while the number of workers was increasing and their grouses unattended.

The workers had many grouses pertaining to their wages and work conditions that needed urgent redress, and without a proper representation the workers were given a raw deal by employers, particularly the contractors who gave priority to foreigners, he told Bernama here today.

Balasubramaniam, who is also the secretary of the Union of Employees of Port Ancillary Services Suppliers (Unepass), said there had been a workers' representative on the board since 1964 except from 1986 to 1994 and from 2007 until now.
