PAS national election director Abdul Halim Abdul Rahman today told the Islamist party’s 56th annual meet that it would be in dire straits if it does not work hard to register new voters.

abdul halim abdul rahman He explained that this is because they have already reached near saturation in milking support from amongst those who are registered as voters.

"In Hulu Selangor, we lost six percent of Malay votes and ten percent of Indian votes.. In Manek Urai we lost 6.3 percent of Malay votes."

If this trend continues in the two states, he warned, that the party will lose its comfortable position.

"In Kelantan, under these conditions we can only defend 24 of our currently held seats, while another 18 will be 'gray' areas. In Selangor, Pakatan will lose the state government and PAS will be left with two seats."

Abdul Halim added that PAS must strive to register the four million-odd unregistered voters in Malaysia.

"If we do not register new voters, our state governments will be on the verge of collapse."

Other than registering new voters, Abdul Halim said that to ensure the party was adequately prepared to face the upcoming elections, PAS must make sure it is sufficiently funded to campaign effectively and to make sure that party workers are trained well enough to handle all aspects of the job.

He also noted that there has been a disparity in terms of the party machinery in Kedah, Kelantan and Selangor, and urged the Selangor to emulate the two other states in this respect.

"The party machinery in Kedah and Kelantan is not the same as in Selangor. In Kedah and Kelantan the state government has helped the party machinery a lot," he said.
