The government has filed an appeal in the Court of Appeal against the acquittal of DAP leader Karpal Singh for allegedly uttering seditious words against the Perak sultan.

sibu by election karpal singh According to Karpal, solicitor-general Idris Harun had on June 15 filed a notice of appeal against High Court judge Azman Abdullah’s decision to acquit him of the sedition charge.

"I will defend myself with all the might and power at my command at the hearing of the appeal," Karpal said in a statement today.

Judge Azman acquitted Karpal last Friday without calling for his defence.

He ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against the Bukit Gelugor parliamentarian.

Karpal was charged under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 for allegedly uttering seditious words against the Perak sultan at a press conference on Feb 6 last year.

He had allegedly said that legal action could be instituted against the Perak sultan over his role in the state constitutional crisis earlier last year.

The wheel-chair bound opposition politician faces a maximum fine of RM5,000 or three years' imprisonment, or both, if found guilty.
