'EC is not Superman'

KSN: We know that Election Commission chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof is not Superman. All the public expects is that you do things as an independent commission is expected to without giving the slightest impression that the EC is taking sides with political parties.

That has not been the case. For example, why is that the new voters registration forms are not freely available? This is not Superman stuff, is it? Registration should be allowed to be made everywhere like post offices, banks and many other places.

In compiling the list, all the EC is required to do is to ensure that the registered are Malaysian citizens entitled to vote, verify the addresses are as in the ICs and no duplications - both of which you can double-check with the National Registration Department.

The EC is supposed to be independent, answerable only to His Majesty the King. Is that the way the EC behaves? You know the answer to that. Perception in the public eye is everything.

Yuvan: If EC is not and cannot be like Superman, then it should not pretend to be Superman when it comes to making most of its decisions (regarding election procedures) in favour of the BN government. The EC must realise that conducting elections is a sacred duty as every elected member of parliament and state assembly will determine the ultimate destiny of the nation.

The onus is on the EC itself to work towards becoming an authority that is 100 percent competent, transparent and independent. In other words, the EC has no choice but to become Superman and equip itself to fully wipe out all kinds of malpractices and questionable tactics used by the candidates (both from the ruling and opposition parties) to garner voters' support.

If necessary, it has to push for reforms and seek for enhancement or changes in the relevant laws, rules and guidelines. The EC must ensure that every citizen who is entitled to vote can put his trust and confidence in its conduct and functions.

YF: What a silly response. So Abdul Aziz admitted that the EC is incompetent and that it only has the competence to conduct an election but is unable to ensure that the rules are followed.

So if that is the case, then the entire EC should be sacked and replaced with competent people, because the current ones admit that they cannot do the job. You can start by sacking yourself first.

Keturunan Malaysia Of course, you are no superman but that does not mean that you deserve to be less than qualified for the job.

Furthermore, Abdul Aziz, go ask any ordinary kid why he didn't do this or that, and he will give you a thousand reasons. You are not a little kid, are you? Neither are we.

Mr. Huang: Does the EC accept or reject a Speaker's decision to vacate a seat? Or does it depend on who the Speaker is? In the Perak case, the Speaker announced that three state assembly people had resigned based on a pre-signed letter.

A state assembly person who had earlier signed a pre-election letter said he would vacate the seat if he jumped to another party or declared himself independent. Why did the EC reject the letter of resignation? Why didn't the EC call for by elections? Was the EC biased?

Sarajun Hoda: First, you are appointed by BN and not the real government, so you will never speak against the interest of your paymaster although the money you get and the rezeki your family enjoys comes from the people whom you betray.

The world heard what Najib Razak said ( in Sibu ) but you had to interpret the other way to suit your masters. If you cannot enforce the overspending limits and political corruption, why do we have the laws in the first place? Only to be used against the opposition?

If the opposition would have said or done the same thing, would you not in a flash have declared it foul and gone for re-election? You cannot fool the people all the time.

ACR: I have never read this much garbage in a long time. "We have to determine whether Najib's promise influenced voters?" What a joke. Isn't a promise of money for development during elections a corrupt practice which is an offence in all functioning democracies?

You say you want the courts to determine if an offence was committed but the Election Offences Act is under your purview. Did you initiate any action?

CPL: This guy's public relations is worse than his former boss, Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman. The EC is a body entrusted by the constitution to conduct elections. If you cannot do the job, you should quit. If the government has not provided you a budget to secure the human resources to do so, then there should be a vote of no confidence in the EC and the BN.

Anonymous: What about the indelible ink bought and discarded by BN. It cost the taxpayers RM2.9 million . Clearly, if the ink was used, BN would have lost many more seats.
