Rais urges MACC to hasten probe on illegal sand mining
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should expedite investigations and take action against those involved in uncontrolled sand mining, especially in Selangor, said Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim.
He said any delay in the MACC acting on this issue would only cause the problem to get worse and lead to the destruction of the environment.
"Indiscriminate mining of sand is not only against the National Land Code but also unjustified robbery of natural resources.
"Pictures of huge holes left behind after mining sand and not filling them up with earth shows the irresponsibility of the people involved.
"As such, it would be strange if the MACC does not delve into this. I feel this is one case where the commission should play its role in an expeditious manner," he told reporters after opening the Rapat 1Malaysia carnival at the Sri Maha Mariamman Devasthanam temple square in Batu Caves today.
The carnival, organised by the Special Affairs Department (Jasa), was also attended by Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Maglin Dennis D'Cruz.
Some 5,000 people mostly from the Indian community in the Klang Valley attended the event.
