Landscape Malaysia, a non-govenmental organisation (NGO), today called on the Selangor and federal governments to tighten enforcement on sand mining activities to ensure wildlife and the

environment were not threatened by indiscriminate sand mining.

Yahya A Jalil, a member of its board of governors, said lax enforcement on sand mining may cause companies given permits to mine sand to engage in profiteering at the expense of the environment and welfare of the people.

"This matter cannot be taken lightly. I fear the Wetlands (a nature park in Selangor) will disappear forever if sand mining activities near it are not stopped," he told a press conference at Landscape Malaysia's office in Petaling Jaya today.

The NGO was formed on the initiative of former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his wife Jeanne Abdullah.

Yahya added that the NGO would be submitting a detailed report on the situation at the Wetlands park to the Selangor and federal governments soon.
