Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen today expressed the fear that sand mining allegedly close to the Paya Indah Wetlands in Dengkil, Selangor, may have a negative impact on tourism.

She said such activity might result in fewer number of tourists visiting the wetlands.

It would also have a negative effect on the wildlife habitat and the environment, she told reporters when asked for her comments after launching the 2010 Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival in Kuala Lumpur.

NONE It has been alleged that about 20 hectares, at some points only about 50 metres from the wetlands, had been encroached upon by those engaged in sand mining.

Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had responded by saying that the state government had knowledge of the activity and that it was handled by a subsidiary of the state government, Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd (KSSB).

On another matter, Ng ( right ) said the ministry was considering offering recognition to tourism products according to a grading system.

"We are looking into recognising tourism products, including wetlands and eco-tourism products, by using a star grading system," she said.

Those who get the five-star rating would serve as an example for other tourism operators to upgrade the quality of their service, she added.
