The two youths arrested on Sunday during a Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra) assembly in Pasir Salak, Perak have been remanded until Aug 5.

The two were part of the 16 people arrested during the gathering which was organised for the settlers to voice out their problems against Felcra’s management.

Thirteen of them were released on Sunday night while three were kept in further detention. One of them was released earlier today on police bail.

Lenggong state assemblyperson Razman Zakaria identified the duo as Norfirdaus Ismail, 18 and Mohd Saifullah Ismail, 17, who were arrested for allegedly possessing penknives which are deemed as weapons.

Ahmad Ramzi Othman Jalaluddin, 42 who was released today, was held for allegedly obstructing policemen present at the assembly.

"The remand orders were applied yesterday. However, Ahmad Ramzi has been released," Razman told Malaysiakini through a telephone interview.

All three are PAS members and were part of the organiser’s team for the assembly.

The Kampung Gajah police station confirmed that Norfirdaus and Saifullah were being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Dangerous Weapon Act 1958 while Ahmad was being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants from discharging their duties.

Heavy police presence

NGO National Children of Felda Settlers' Association (Anak) had organised a two-day assembly over the weekend for the Felcra settlers to gather and share their complaints about the administration and management of their assets.

Prior to the assembly, the organisers and settlers were pressured by Felcra’s president Tajuddin Abdul Rahman - who is also Pasir Salak MP - to call off the assembly.

The organisers, however, went ahead with the assembly which saw a strong police presence beginning from the first day of the event.

On the second day, the police decided to move in and arrested 16 people trying to get into the venue.
