PAS today moved to capitalise on claims that 1Malaysia was a failure and that the campaign was championed solely by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

NONE PAS central committee member Dzulkefly Ahmad ( second from right in pic ) said that even Najib’s deputy Muhyiddin Yassin and former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, according to their interpretation, were trying to discredit 1Malaysia.

"Put together Malay right wing ultras in Perkasa, supported by Muhyiddin, and that spells the end of 1Malaysia," said Dzulkefly during a press conference at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

"(1Malaysia’s) biggest enemy is Umno. As the saying goes, with friends like these, you don’t need enemies," he added.

On the contrary, Dzulkefly said PAS and its Pakatan Rakyat allies were already practising the basic tenets of 1Malaysia by actively promoting better inter-ethnic relations and cooperation.

NONE In a similar vein, central committee member Lo' Lo' Ghazali ( right in pic ) questioned Muhyiddin’s timing, choosing only to be critical of 1Malaysia when the premier was abroad.

"Is the deputy prime minister only brave when his boss is not there?," she asked.

On Monday, Muhyiddin appeared to have agreed with Dr Mahathir’s criticism of 1Malaysia, that 1Malaysia was prone to misintepretation.

'Pakatan already 1Malaysia'

Lo’ Lo’, who is also Titiwangsa MP, was critical of how Umno constantly betrays its lack of respect for 1Malaysia, accusing the BN’s largest component party of using civil servants to serve their own ends.

Citing a recent Islamic event jointly-organised on Sunday by federal Islamic agency Jawi and the Umno Cheras and Titiwangsa divisions, she said the event turned out to be a pro-Umno affair that shunned non-supporters of the ruling government, including her.

“Never mind 1Malaysia, they can’t even live up to Satu  Melayu (one Malay) or Satu Muslim ,” she said.

NONE Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad ( left in pic ) pointed out that the people have been receptive to Najib’s 1Malaysia concept but accused Umno of blatant attempts to “kill it”.

“The people want it (1Malaysia) to become a reality, and it is a concept that needs to be championed, but Umno and BN are not the right vehicles... if you want to bring change, the right vehicle is the Pakatan," he said.

Dzulkefly noted that the Pakatan has been practising the basic tenets of 1Malaysia in its every action, from the interactions between the coalition’s members to their various programmes reaching out to each and every Malaysian.

“This (1Malaysia) slogan is a complete misfit with BN. This may sound a bit tongue-in-cheek, but while Najib is chanting the slogan, Pakatan has been practising it without having to promote it. We do it based on our dream of a new Malaysia,” he said.

Also present was Federal Territory PAS commissioner Mohamad Nor Mohamad.
