The People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) has achieved its target of having at least 30 percent of its members comprising non-Malays, according to its director-general Zaidon Asmuni.

    

Most of Rela's non-Malay members were Chinese and Indian youths who hailed from the west coast of the peninsula, he told Bernama after launching Rela's Big Bike Club 1Malaysia Tour in Bachok yesterday.

rela 290507 passport being checked He said Rela had also set a target of having 2.5 million members nationwide, especially those aged between 16 and 40, before the end of 2012 in support of the government's effort to get more youths to be involved in Rela activities.

He said the Big Bike Tour, led by the club president Abdul Rahman Jaafar, was another effort to register new members of Rela.

    

"These bikers will be arriving at small villages to reach the target groups, including 'Mat Rempit' (reckless motorcyclists) and 'Mat Lepak' (those who hang out aimlessly), to draw them to join Rela," he added.

    

Throughout the tour, which would end in Putrajaya on Aug 9, the bikers would also carry out community programmes like gotong-royong and visiting homes of the underprivileged.
