Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the 'saman ekor' or postal summonses issued by the authorities to traffic offenders were not contradictory to the law.

However, he said, the government received many feedback on the matter including from those who complained that it was burdensome.

He said the complaints received included the problem of renewing road tax while there were some motorists who had been summoned repeatedly with the compound rising to a hefty sum to the extent that they could not afford to pay the fines.

As such, he said, the government would discuss the issue of postal summonses in a special committee chaired by the Chief Secretary to the Government, Mohd Sidek Hassan.

"The committee had a meeting today to discuss the feedback received.

"We want to see whether the summonses had actually posed a burden to the people or there are other ways that we can think of.

"But in terms of the law, there is no problem," he told reporters in Kuantan today.

Earlier, Muhyiddin launched the Pahang Strategic Biodiversity- Biotechnology Plan in Kuantan today.

Also present were Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovations Fadillah Yusof and the Pahang Information, Science, technology and Innovations exco Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin.

There were many objections to the implementation of the postal summonses previously and there were also calls on the government to review its decision not to reduce the fines imposed on traffic offenders.
