Old Town White Coffee has invited the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) to inspect its chain of kopitiam restaurants nationwide to determine their "halal" (permissible in
Islam) status.
Old Town Group chairman Dr Ahmed Tasir Lope Pihie said today the restaurants had acquired the "halal" certificate from the Islamic Food and Research Council Asia.
"Now, we have taken another initiative by asking Jakim to conduct an inspection of our outlets in the country, beginning with Shah Alam.
"We do not compromise on the halal practice in preparing food at the more than 160 outlets, and obtain fresh supply and needs only from vendors who have the halal certificate," he said in a statement.
Ahmed Tasir said that since last year, a special team of 10 Muslim staff monitored the processing of food at the restaurants.
