In the Selangor's Subang parliamentary seat, sources told malaysiakini that a last-minute withdrawal by Dr Nasir Hashim of the Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) would pave the way for Irene Fernandez of Keadilan to run a one-on-one race against the Barisan Nasional candidate, MIC stalwart K.S. Nijhar.

Dr Nasir had initially announced that he would be contesting as an independant candidate in the constituency, setting the scene for a three-cornered fight. Irene, a political debutante, has been active in non-governmental organisations for many years and only joined the political fray this year upon the inception of Keadilan.

The director of Tenaganita, a women and migrant workers' NGO, is currently standing trial for allegedly spreading false news regarding the deaths of detainees at the immigration camps.

A Keadilan central committee member, Irene will be running under the Democratic Action Party's banner in Subang under an agreement between the two Barisan Alternatif component parties. The BN incumbent for Subang, MIC's M. Mahalingam, has announced his retirement from politics.
