Police bail has been extended for another 14 days for the 30 protestors arrested during the 50th commemoration of the Internal Security Act (ISA) vigil held on Aug 1.

NONE The protestors were ordered to report to the Petaling Jaya Police District Headquarters as their original police bail dated from Aug 2 expires today.

Investigating officer ASP Azaidi Ab Latib had called the 30 protestors to come to the police station today at 11:30am. But upon arrival, the protestors and their bailors were stopped by security guards.

Suaram coordinator E Nalini, who was among those arrested, said that the police would not allow them in as they were too big in number.

The activists and media had to wait by the roadside until the guard received further instructions.

After about 30 minutes of waiting, Nalini grouped them in tens and they were allowed to meet Azaidi one at a time.

Azaidi informed them that the bail had been extended and they are required to appear in the Petaling Jaya magistrate's court on Sept 1 at 8am.

Not serious

Abolish ISA Movement (GMI) president Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh however feels that the police are not serious in their investigation.

"Before (when first arrested) the police told us to appear in court today, but we received calls yesterday to come here (police station) instead. I think that they will do the same when the 14 days expire," he told Malaysiakini .

Nalini said that Suaram will request for the case to be withdrawn.

"Suaram will write to Petaling Jaya police chief Arjunaidi Mohamed and to Bukit Aman to request the authorities to withdraw this case. We will also seek action from Suhakam (Human Rights Commission)," she added.

gst 110310 s arutchelvan 36 activists were arrested nationwide for holding candlelight vigils to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ISA in eight places around the country.

They were arrested at the Dataran MBPJ, Padang Timur in Petaling Jaya where the vigil was held. Among those arrested were Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) secretary-general S Arutchelvan ( left ) and PKR supreme council member Badrul Hisham Shaharin.

Arjunaidi claimed that the arrests were made because the assembly was held without a permit.
