The father of murdered Nurin Jazlin,Jazimin Abdul Jalil, the government and the police are still working a settlement through mediation to the negligence suit filed by Jazimin.

Jazimin, 35, a security company employee, sued the Inspector-General of Police, Selangor police chief, Petaling Jaya police chief and the Malaysian government for negligence over the distribution of his daughter's autopsy pictures on the Internet.

nurin jazlin jazimin On Jan 29 this year, Jazimin was allowed to include lance corporal Amran Arifin, who allegedly distributed eight-year-old Nurin Jazlin's ( left ) autopsy pictures, as the fifth defendant after the defendants in their defence statement indicated the pictures were distributed by Amran.

His lawyers Akbardin Abdul Kader and Siti Natasha Basheer Hassan together with senior federal counsel Zureen Elina Mohd Dom, representing the government and the police, today met High Court Judge Harmindar Singh Dhaliwal in chambers for the mediation process.

Quantum of damages

Speaking to the media later in Kuala Lumpur, Akbardin said the judge ordered the plaintiff's lawyer to do a research on the issue of quantum of the damages sought by Jazimin.

He said the judge also ordered Zureen Elina to submit the research on the issue of whether the government and the police were responsible for Amran's act, saying he had acted on his own in distributing the pictures.

"As at today, we failed to reach a settlement, but the judge indicated the parties to move towards settlement. We will submit on the two issues on Oct 15," he said.

In the suit filed on Aug 21, 2008, Jazimin who was in court this morning, is seeking damages and other relief deemed fit by the court, claiming that the pictures were not for public consumption but only for the investigations of his daughter's case.

Nurin Jazlin went missing on Aug 20, 2007, after she went to the night market near her home in Section 1, Wangsa Maju here.

Twenty-seven days later, her body was found stuffed in a gymnasium bag in front of a shop in Jalan PJS 1/48 in Petaling Jaya and an autopsy report revealed that she was sexually abused.
