DAP's promises should Pakatan Rakyat seize Putrajaya were discussed "in general" by the coalition's top leadership but are not its official stand, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said.

"However, it has not been detailed as yet," Anwar told a press conference at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya. "Although it is not Pakatan's official policy, it is all right for the matter to be brought up by DAP."

Anwar said this when ask to comment on DAP's claim that Pakatan would provide RM1,000 cash handouts annually to senior citizens, abolish saman ekor traffic fines and provide free Internet access via Wi-Fi nationwide.

A number of PKR and PAS leaders when contacted yesterday said that they were in the dark over DAP's promises, adding that they were never consulted before the announcement.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng made the announcement on Aug 13, claiming that he had received the green light from his Pakatan allies.

Anwar: Free Wi-Fi sounds good

Anwar clarified that he had indeed spoken to Lim on the "suggestions".

"In particular, we spoke about free Wi-Fi. We even went so far as to discuss the cost involved," he said.

According to Anwar, the implementation of such a project may cost as low as RM10 million for each state.

"If the cost is really that low, we will implement it in Selangor in the near term," he said.

Umno leaders have expressed scepticism over DAP's proposal, arguing that many of Pakatan's election promises had yet to be implemented.

Other critics, such as DAP's Kota Alam Shah assemblyperson M Manoharan, have urged Pakatan to state its core policies in reforming key institutions, education and to resolve racial imbalances instead of making populist pronouncements.
