A bank to keep the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of all new born babies should be set up to facilitate investigations of cases involving baby-dumping, Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said.

He said this would facilitate the police in identifying parents of the babies concerned.

"Although it is going to take time and involve a high cost, it is the best solution to address cases of baby-dumping in the country," he told reporters after launching the ‘Balik Kampung, Rumah Selamat’ campaign at the Puchong IOI Mall near here today.

Khalid said there was a need to set up the DNA bank in view of the increase in baby-dumping cases lately.

Last year 79 such cases were reported but this year, within the first eight months, 65 cases had been reported.

Khalid said there were time when the society had to be a "busybody", especially in matters pertaining to social problems.

He said many cases involving baby-dumping could not be resolved fast because of lack of information and expressed the need for public cooperation to help police to solve the cases.

In another development, Khalid said 1,200 policemen would be involve in this year's Ops Sikap in conjunction with the Aidilfitri celebration.
