The second son of a state executive councillor died at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital yesterday, a day after he was involved in a car-lorry accident in Bukit Selambau.

Syazmin Hamdan, 16, succumbed to head and body injuries at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital’s intensive car unit here at 10.45pm yesterday.

Syazmin’s brother, Syazwan, 18, was driving the Perodua Kelisa, with two friends as passengers, when the car collided with an oncoming lorry, skidded and plunged into a drain.

Syazman, who sustained critical injuries in the 3pm crash, is in a coma at the hospital. The two friends sustained minor injuries have been discharged.

Kedah Youth and Sport, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Dr Hamdan Mohamed Khalib has accepted his son’s death as fate.

“Now, I can only pray that my other son, Syazman, comes out of the coma and recovers soon,” he told reporters at his home here today.

Car plunged into drain

He said upon arriving at the scene, the car driven by Syazwan was found to have collided with a lorry coming from the opposite direction.

"Syazwan tried to avoid the lorry, but it skidded and plunged into a drain," he said, holding back tears.

Hamdan said the accident occurred after Syazwan and his two friends went to fetch Shazmin from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Sik.

"Between my two sons, Syazmin was more conscious and could relate the events leading to the crash. I never thought he would succumb to his injuries," he said.

Syazmin was laid to rest at the Kampung Merbok Muslim cemetery at 11.30am today.

Among those who paid their last respects were Kedah Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul and Merbok Umno chief Tajul Urus Md Zain.
