The traffic flow in major highways in the peninsula is reported to be smooth as tens of thousands of city folks began exiting the national capital to return to their hometowns for the coming Aidilfitri.

The Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) said there was no clogging up of traffic as of noon today although there was an increase in the number of vehicles.

An MHA spokesman said congestion could be expected from this evening.

"The traffic flow towards the Sungai Perak Toll Plaza is under control. No report of accident as of this morning," he said when contacted.

The MHA said in its website that traffic was building up along the south-bound route, especially between Nilai to Seremban and north-bound route from Jelapang to Kuala Kangsar between Km262 to Km255.

For the east-bound journey, traffic was slowing down at the Gombak Toll Plaza and at the Bentong Barat intersection at Km76.

Some 1.4 million vehicles are expected to be on major roads today and tomorrow for the "balik kampung" rush.
