Millions of Muslims performed the ‘solat sunat’ Aidilfitri this morning in mosques nationwide as they observed the end of fasting month of Ramadan.

The ‘balik kampung’ continues, with those living in cities returning to their hometowns and villages to celebrate the auspicious occasion with families, relatives and friends, leaving the national capital deserted.

Open house events, a common feature during major celebrations in the country, were also held and among them was an open house hosted by Prime Minister Najib Razak and cabinet ministers at the prime minister's official residence in Seri Perdana, attended by thousands of people.

Earlier in the national capital, Najib and wife Rosmah Mansor attended a breakfast with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah at Istana Negara.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and wife Noorainee Abdul Rahman.

Their Majesties later performed the solat sunat Aidilfitri with the people at the National Mosque.

Tuanku Mizan was accompanied by Najib, Muhyiddin and cabinet ministers.

After the prayers, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the prime minister spent some time shaking hands with the people at the mosque and exchanging Hari Raya greetings.

Later at the Istana, Tuanku Mizan and Tuanku Nur Zahirah hosted a reception for VIP guests and heads of foreign missions.

Pak Lah's open house next week

In Kuantan , Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah performed the Aidilfitri prayers with about 4,000 people at the Sultan Ahmad 1 Mosque.

Also performing their prayers at the mosque were Sultanah of Pahang Sultanah Kalsom, Tengku Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Abdullah, Tengku Puan of Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob and wife.

Adnan later hosted an open house at Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Ahmad Shah, Kuantan, from 2.30pm to 6pm.

In Kuala Kangsar , Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah performed the Aidilfitri prayers with about 2,000 people at Ubudiah Mosque.

Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, Raja Dihilir of Perak Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa and members of the royal court as well as Menteri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul also performed prayers at the mosque.

Zambry's open house was held at his official residence in Ipoh from 3pm to 6pm.

In Penang , former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi performed the Aidilfitri prayers at Masjid Jamek Al-Jamiul Badawi in Kepala Batas. He and wife Jeanne Abdullah later visited his parents' graves.

Abdullah will host an open house at Kompleks Budi Penyayang, Kepala Batas on Sept 18.

In Alor Seta r, Sultan of Kedah Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam and Tuanku Sultanah as well as Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak performed the prayers at Masjid Zahir.

It is a merrier Hari Raya this year especially for farmers in the state whose bountiful harvest took place ahead of the Aidilfitri.

In Kuching , Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Sarawak Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng performed the prayers with 2,000 people at Masjid Jamek Negeri.

Joining him were Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud and state leaders.

The Yang Dipertua Negeri later hosted an open house at Astana Negeri in Petrajaya.

Taib hosted an open house at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

S'gor sultan, MB and 15,000 in state mosque

In Shah Alam , Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Raja Muda Tengku Amir Shah performed the ‘solat sunat’ Aidilfitri with 15,000 people at Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque.

Also performing prayers at the mosque were Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and members of the state executive council.

In Kota Kinabalu , some 2,000 people attended the open house hosted by Yang Dipertua Negeri Ahmadshah Abdullah at Istana Negeri.

Present were Chief Minister Musa Aman, Deputy Chief Ministers Yahya Hussin and Joseph Pairin Kitingan, cabinet ministers and Indonesian Consul-General in Kota Kinabalu Soepeno Sahid.

The open house by the chief minister and state cabinet will be held tomorrow at Likas Sports Complex from 10am to 2pm.

In Muar , Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Ismail celebrated the Aidilfitri with the people at Istana Hinggap in Jalan Petri.

Sultan Ibrahim and Sultanah Raja Zarith Sofea and their son Tengku Mahkota of Johor Tengku Ismail Ibrahim were on hand to greet their guests who came to the palace from 9.30am.

Present were Menteri Besar Abdul Ghani Othman and state executive council members.

Earlier, the Sultan of Johor and the Tengku Mahkota performed the prayers with 3,000 people at Masjid Jamek Sultan Ibrahim.

In Kota Bharu , the Regent of Kelantan Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra Sultan Ismail Petra performed the Aidilfitri prayers at Masjid Muhammadi.

He later visited the Royal Mausoleum in Langgar.
