The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has set up a special team together with the police to handle threats to national security and unity channelled via the Internet, Information Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim ( below )said tonight.

NONE He said that since early this year, the MCMC had received 533 complaints on abuse of the Internet, particularly those involving social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

"Of the 533 complaints, 26 percent were against those who attempted to destroy racial unity in the country," he said at an Aidilfitri open house organised by the ministry in Kuala Klawang, Jelebu.

Some 7,000 people attended the open house, which incorporated stage performances and donations to needy Jelebu folk.

Rais said the government did not blame Facebook or Twitter because such websites were useful.

"Based on the 533 complaints, the government feels that the time has come to be firm with those who ignore our advice," he said.
