It's been a ritual for Padungan assemblyperson Dominique Ng to go to Padang Merdeka in Kuching with his friends, supporters and a flagpole to observe Malaysia Day, the past six years.

Ng, the sole PKR elected representative in Sarawak, is one of the very few who observe Malaysia Day publicly, since 2005.

This year, Ng's Malaysia Day observance was a little better than last year's as there were some cultural dance performances.

pkr keadilan sarawak 170406 dominique ng About 50 people witnessed the hoisting of the national flag and Sarawak state flag, and reading of the Malaysia Proclamation in Kuching this morning.

"We've always felt it is important to observe Malaysia Day because many people, especially today's youths, are not aware of this historic date.

"It was at this location decades ago that Malaysia came to be," Ng (left) told reporters after the flag-raising ceremony.

Ng welcomed the federal government's move to celebrate Malaysia Day as a public holiday, starting this year, describing it as a step in the right direction.

"However, much more needs to be done," he said.
