Lim Guan Eng has lodged a police report this morning against Utusan Malaysia for misquoting him in their front-page story entitled "Repeal Malay rights - DAP's promise if the Opposition wins the election".

The local Malay daily quoted the DAP deputy secretary-general as saying: "Malaysian Malaysia will not accord preference to any race and all with be treated equally" and concluded that DAP would eliminate the special rights of Malays if they came to power.

Lim said the Utusan news story was complete fabrication and challenged the newspaper to provide proof of his statement.

"The reporter did not check with me to confirm her story. It is obviously another malicious lie by the BN controlled newspaper. They are prepared to use these lies to create a false story in order to incite the Malay community against the Chinese," he told malaysiakini .

Lim pointed out that Utusan Malaysia's action was against the Printing Presses and Publications and Sedition Acts and urged the police to investigate the issue. He is also considering taking legal action against the newspaper.

On whether he will urge the public to boycott the paper, Lim responded, "The public should decide whether they want to purchase a paper that lies."

He cautioned voters against racial politics and dirty tricks during the election and said he expected more of this as the polling day approaches.

Lim reiterated that he has always struggled for all Malaysians, irrespective of race. The former Kota Melaka MP was jailed last year for "spreading false news" while championing the cause of an underaged Malay girl.

Yesterday, Utusan Malaysia ran a front page article headlined "Government asked to investigate attempt by foreign embassies to fund opposition parties and NGOs" which has been refuted by the parties concerned.
