Over 200 residents in the vicinity of Kampung Beris Lalang in Bachok staged a peaceful protest against the state government's move in turning the village into a waste disposal site over the past year.

Under the watchful eyes of several policemen, the villagers gathered at the entrance of the waste disposal site from 10am for about an hour.

Beris Lalang federal security and development committee (JKKKP) chairperson Che Hamid Che Deraman told reporters that three memorandum asking the waste disposal site be relocated had been signed by 1,000-odd villagers and would be delivered to Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat soon.

He said stench emanating from the waste disposal site not only affected the villagers, but also the students at SK Beris Lalang and the congregations who came for the daily mass prayers at Beris Lalang mosque.

The villagers also claimed that they could smell the stench several kilometres away and thus, hoped that the state government would find a more suitable location for waste disposal purposes.
