Proton Holdings Bhd expects to finalise talks with several car manufacturers by year-end to facilitate the mass production of a compact model.

Group managing director Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said the national car company was in negotiations with European and Japanese manufacturers on engine collaboration for the compact car named ‘Emas’ which is the acronym for ‘Eco Mobility Advance Solution’.

"The final decision to proceed with the mass production of Emas will be made end of this year," he told reporters at the Paris Motorshow 2010 in Paris today.

In March, Proton launched three EMAS series concept cars at the 80th Geneva International Motorshow in conjunction with its silver jubilee celebration this year.

The Emno series is a joint-venture between Proton and Lotus with Italian designing company, Italdesign Giugiaro, also involved in the project.
