The people of Myanmar want its revered democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi to take the country to greater heights, in as far as unity and democracy are concerned, said National League for Democracy of Myanmar (foreign affairs committee) chairman Nyo Ohn Myint.

He said the people were currently in a state of frustration, judging by events which took place at the recent Myanmar general election on Nov 7.

He alleged that election was fraught with fraud and vote-buying, and that some votes was injected and even rejected.

Ohn Myint was speaking to Bernama at a Deepavali open house organised by the Barisan Nasional parliamentary constituency in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur today.

To a question, he said Suu Kyi could face detention by the Myanmar authorities if she committed major mistake.

Nevertheless, he said the situation was different now as the ethnic minority was totally supportive of the democracy leader who did not get such support in the past two decades.

Ohn Myint also felt that Suu Kyi could further strengthen investments from Malaysia and foreign countries as she was capable of getting more investors to Myanmar.

Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A Kohilan Pillay believed that Suu Kyi’s release would lure more foreign investors to Myanmar which would see numerous economic opportunities that would propel the country to a brighter future.

He said Suu Kyi’s release reflected the beginning of Myanmar’s democratic process, indicating positive signs.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Koh Tsu Koon noted that foreign investors would now feel secure over Myanmar’s political stability, reflecting the military junta’s confidence in relation with her release.

He said Myanmar would not be stable if the country’s democracy leader remained under detention.
