The death of a Kota Tinggi district police headquarters lock-up detainee, S Kalaisilvam, at the Hospital Sultan Ismail near Johor Bahru on Monday, was due to a lung infection and had nothing to do with any incident while under detention and police investigation.

Deputy Home Minister Abu Seman Yusop said the post-mortem clearly showed that Kalaisilvam's death was due to an illness and that the victim had also complained of chest pain before his death.

"While under detention, the victim had informed that he was suffering from chest pain and was sent to hospital on five occasions.

"He had received attention from the police. So, we what we observe is that the death had nothing to do with the detention and police investigation," he said.

Abu Seman disclosed this after launching a police programme in Kluang today. Also present was deputy inspector-general

of police Hussin Ismail and Johor police chief Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff.

Kalaisilvam, 20, was detained after police believed that he was involved in a fight using a weapon on Aug 31, which resulted in one fatality.
