A 17.84-km stretch of road along the east coast of Penang has been renamed Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway in honour of the late chief minister of the state.    

NONE The road incorporates the existing Jelutong Expressway (from its junction with Prangin Road Ghat in the north) and the Bayan Lepas Expressway (from its junction with Jalan Permatang Damat Laut or Batu Maung in the south).  

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state executive council at its meeting today decided on the name change in appreciation and recognition of and to honour the contributions of Chong Eu to the state and country.   

NONE Chong Eu, hailed as the architect of modern Penang, died on Wednesday night at the age of 91 following a stroke he suffered almost a month earlier.

Guan Eng said the expressway comprised four sections of state and federal roads.

    

Chong Eu’s eldest son, Chien Aun, said the family had not made any request but expressed appreciation for the honour accorded his father by the state government.

NONE “It is a recognition accorded by the state government. We do not reject that recognition and are thankful to all those who have helped with the funeral arrangements,” he said.

At 11.15am, the casket bearing the remains of Chong Eu, draped in the Jalur Gemilang Malaysian flag, was taken from his residence in Tanjung Bungah to Dewan Seri Pinang accompanied by military and police honour guards.

The remains will lie in state at the Dewan Seri Pinang until the funeral on Sunday.
