Police are still waiting for instructions from the Attorney-General's Chambers concerning a baby-for-sale case, said Sarawak police commissioner Mohmad Salleh.

He said the Sarawak police department was liaising with the AG's Chambers on the case and that whether charges would be preferred against the suspects would depend on the public prosecutor.

Mohmad told this to reporters after attending a community policing programme in Kota Samarahan near here today.  

In July, Sarawak police detained 17 suspects including a businessman with the "Datuk" title and wife to assist investigations into a baby-for-sale racket.

Out on bail

They were arrested following a sting operation where a 32-year-old Indonesian woman had tried to sell off a newly-born girl to an undercover police officer for RM10,000.

Police also traced eight babies aged from a month to 12 years around this city who were believed to be sold.

The suspects were all subsequently released on police bail but to date no one has been charged in connection with the case.

Recently, Federal CID chief Mohd Bakri Zinin said a baby-for-sale syndicate exposed in the federal capital might be linked to the Sarawak case as well.
