The opposition leader, 64, filed the suit on Sept 7, 2007, claiming Khairy, who was then the Umno Youth deputy chief, had defamed him at a function in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, in August 2007.

Anwar, who is Permatang Pauh MP, claimed the statements made by Khairy had portrayed him as a politician who could not be trusted by the Malays, as one who did not give importance to the struggle of Malays and their rights, and was capable of betraying the Malay struggle and its rights just to gain the support of non-Malays.

He also claimed Khairy had made statements to insinuate that he was a political agent of the United States and the Jews.

Anwar also claimed Khairy had ill intentions in making the statements, which were lies and baseless.

He is seeking aggravated, general and exemplary damages.
