The Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) has become the first government hospital to adopt the concept of recycling through the establishment of its Environment Group.

The group chairperson Dr Noor Haliza Yussof said its main committee, comprising 17 HKL staff, would play a role in creating awareness among the other staff on the importance of environmental preservation.

"This group will be deployed to organise projects such as recycling campaigns and lectures to create awareness among HKL staff to collect hospital wastes for recycling," she told reporters after the launch of the group by HKL deputy director (II) Dr Ding Lay Ming today.

Dr Noor Haliza, who is also HKL department of obstetrics and gynaecology senior consultant, said the establishment of the group could also reduce fees paid by the hospital to the cleaning contractor.

She said proceeds from the projects organised by the group would also be used to help HKL patients with financial difficulties.

Several activities were also organised in conjunction with the launch, including talks and exhibitions by the Department of Environment, Alam Flora Sdn Bhd and World Wildlife Fund.
