A 33-year-old man crashed his car through a police roadblock in Georgetown early today, hitting a stationary motorcyclist and two police four-wheel-drive vehicles and injuring a policeman and the motorcyclist.

The man, who was driving a Proton Persona car, was believed to be under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred at about 12.30am along Jalan Paya Terubong on the lane heading towards Balik Pulau, North-East District police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said.

He said the policeman, Lance Corporal Amirrul Fitri Norrizat, 25, of the first battalion General Operations Force in Ulu Kinta, Perak, was badly injured in the right thigh while the motorcyclist was slightly hurt.

"The 20-year-old motorcyclist was thrown off his machine which was dragged by the car for about 150 metres," he told reporters.

Gan said Amirrul Fitri was caught between the two police vehicles parked on the road shoulder as the car hit them and its engine caught fire.

The fire was put out by firemen from the Paya Terubong fire & rescue station.

The policeman and the motorcyclist were sent to the Penang hospital, he said.

He also said that the driver of the car had been arrested for reckless driving.
