PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim hinted that a nationalistic and Malay-centric Najib Abdul Razak may be anti-Islamic and against universal values of justice.

NONE "During my time as education minister there were qiyamullail (night prayers) session for teachers. But when a new education minister took over, he cancelled this," he told a PAS-organised special prayer and ceramah session in Shah Alam last night

"He said that Islamic and universal values may threaten to derail the real Malay struggle.”

Najib, now the premier, had taken over from him as education minister.

Anwar said that Islamic values are important to stress through such methods as the qiyamullail , as it builds belief and character.

NONE PAS spiritual advisor Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat also warned of those who reject Islamic values.

"Those who reject Islam, reject Allah. Malay rights is no substitute," he cautioned.

These are "crazy" times said Anwar, describing the turmoil and controversy in Selangor and the nation.

"It’s crazy that those who defend the constitution and the Malay rulers are labelled traitors, while those who stripped the rulers of their power now claim to be loyal.

"It is crazy that a (public relations) company like Apco is so powerful that one letter from it can cause the suspension of four members of parliament. And yet we (the taxpayers) are the ones paying (Apco) RM70 million.”.

‘Najib’s painkiller’

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim also hit out at Umno, reiterating that the BN party is the “real traitor” to the institution of the royalty.

NONE Recounting the saga of the appointment of the state secretary, Khalid said the state government will not play dead and let the BN-led federal government walk all over it.

"This is not (Dr Mohd) Khir Toyo (former MB). This is not Umno. This is Pakatan Rakyat, and we will continue to fight and to expose Umno's real stripes," he said to cheers and shouts of "Takbir" from the crowd.

Anwar told Khalid and his executive council members to go on the offensive.

"My advice and reminder is that we answer their challenge but we must also focus our response. We must also fight back.

"Though as we fight them but make sure that we conduct ourselves properly according to principles of good governance."

In this respect, he said the state government should focus on taking care of the people as the rakyat is their weapon in fighting the BN onslaught to wrest back the state.

PAS leaders also pledged support to Khalid and his government as they weather this "small matter".

'Najib's painkiller'

Commenting on the five-minute meetings that Najib is holding with all BN MPs, Anwar said this is a sign of desperation.

NONE He dismissed the tactic as offering a “mere painkiller” when a 'sickly BN' requires an effective cure.

"BN is facing a big catastrophe. Five minutes is not enough to help them. If it is a doctor, five minutes is only good to give them Panadol . It is not enough to cure them," he said.

His shouts of "Reformasi" and "Takbir" at the end of his speech were enthusiastically echoed by the crowd.
