Two enforcement officers involved in a demolition exercise to clear agricultural land in Sungai Besi yesterday stand accused of leaving with stolen ‘keepsakes’ - chickens and a yam.

Worse, one of them allegedly made a racist remark, telling a farmer who had confronted him to “ balik Cina ” .

The Selangor DAP lodged a police report today in Seri Kembangan against the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement unit employee who allegedly made the remark.

NONE Selangor exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah claimed that the officer sneaked away when challenged to identify himself.

“I hope the police will be serious in investigating this. DBKL officers should not be making racist remarks, as it could stir up racial sentiments,” he told journalists after he and some farmers lodged the report.

Ean Yong showed two photographs to back the claim of theft.

stolen chicken under white cloth One shows an object ( circled in photo) covered with a white cloth on a DBKL bulldozer. The item is said to be a hen coop  belonging to a farmer, Yap Keat Chong, who claimed there were about five chickens in it.

The other photo shows a middle-aged man, said to be an enforcement officer attached to the FT Land Office, holding a yam said to have been taken from one of the farms.

“Are they stealing people’s property as a keepsake every time there is a demolition exercise?” Ean Yong asked.

Compensation plea

Hundreds of enforcement officers from the two agencies had demolished about 20 houses, belonging to about 100 farmers who had occupied the site for 40 years.  

The 40-hectare area, cleared for a military academy, is located behind The Mines golf club in Serdang.

All the buildings on the site were torn down, and the developer has since erected a four-metre-high wooden hoarding at the entrance to prevent the farmers from getting into the area.

DAP’s Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching (left) said the farmers know they do not own the land, but hope the developer and Defence Ministry will show compassion and compensate them.

She added that the farmers were only asking for RM1.6 million, “which is not much”.
