MTUC spotlight on hazardous working conditions
About 200 people gathered at the Workers Monument in Penang today to remember those who were killed or injured in the course of work. The gathering is a prelude to International Labour Day which falls on May 1.
Organised by the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (Penang division), the gathering - dubbed the 'Workers Day Memorial' - was held at a monument constructed in memory of some 30 workers who died during the construction of the Penang bridge.
The monument, situated near the toll plaza on the Prai end of the bridge, was funded by the state government.
Among those present were Penang state executive councillor Dr Toh Kin Woon, Penang MTUC president Abdul Razak Hamid, National Union of Transport Equipment and Allied Industry Workers executive secretary Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud and Universiti Sains Malaysia lecturer Dr Rohana Ariffin.
