The Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) is to ensure that only winnable candidates are fielded by the BN component party in the next Sarawak election.

NONE SPDP president William Mawan Ikom ( left ) said today the party would pick candidates who fulfilled the criteria and standards to ensure victory for the BN.

"I am waiting for a full report on the status and popularity of our candidates before making the final decision.

"However, I am confident that all the incumbents qualify," he told reporters.

Mawan, who is Sarawak social development and urbanisation minister, was asked to comment on the statement by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on Sunday that the BN would only field winnable candidates in the next election.

In the 2006 Sarawak election, SPDP won all the eight seats it contested, enabling the Sarawak BN to win 63 of the 71 seats in the state legislative assembly.
