Two latest books of the Internal Security Act (ISA) detainee Saari Sungib were launched today.
The books entitled 'Penahanan Tidak Sah & Mala Fide' and 'Malaysia Boleh...SB Lagi Boleh' were respectively the sixth and seventh in Saari's Suara Dari Kamunting series.
Cruelty of ISA
The launching was held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon with about 50 people in attendance.
Former Bar Council president Sulaiman Abdullah and former
Utusan Melayu
editor-in-chief Said Zahari launched the book. The latter is also a former ISA detainee.
Contacted by malaysiakini , Saari's wife Aliza Jaafar (photo) said the book series will continue as long as her husband is still in detention.
"We definitely need a platform to disseminate our message and let the people know the cruelty of the ISA," she said.
Saari was arrested with another six
reformasi
leaders - Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor, Tian Chua, Raja Petra Raja Kamaruddin, Hishamuddin Rais, Badrulamin Bahron and Lokman Noor Adam in April 2001 for allegedly plotted to topple the government.
Raja Petra has since been released.
To MPs
The books highlight issues linked to unlawful detention and bad faith on the part of police in applying the provisions of the ISA.
Last Wednesday, Aliza has posted the sixth book to all 193 members of Parliament, expressing her hope that the MPs will read the book and realise that the ISA is being abused.
Earlier this month, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia has recommended to replace the ISA with a comprehensive security law clearly defining what constitutes national security.
