The Butterworth Sessions Court today deferred the sentencing of a former assistant district officer of Seberang Perai Utara who has been found guilty of corruption.

Judge Ikmal Hishan Mohd Tajuddin fixed Jan 28 to sentence Mohd Jamil Mohd Noor, 58, after his counsel Rosli Ismail informed the court that his client was undergoing heart surgery at the Penang General Hospital.

Rosli also produced a letter informing about the operation.

Mohd Jamil has been found guilty of soliciting a bribe of RM60,000 from one Arizal Mohd Arshad as an inducement to mark up the value of compensation in the acquisition of part of a plot of land in Mukim 5, Seberang Perai Utara, for the expansion of a car parking area at the Kepala Batas market.

He committed the offence on Jan 27, 2006 at 11pm at Restoran Nasi Kandar An Nur in Kepala Batas.

Mohd Jamil faces a jail sentence of between 14 years and 20 years or a fine of RM300,000 or five times the amount of bribe.

The prosecution was carried out by deputy public prosecutor of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Janariah Abdul Mutalib.
