A nine-year-old Iraqi girl who lost both her legs in a bomb attack o­n her house in Baghdad has arrived in Malaysia for treatment, an official said Monday.

"Yasmine Wa'adi arrived in a wheelchair and she was immediately taken to a hospital in the city," Isa Nikmat, a spokesman for the government-backed anti-war coalition Peace Malaysia told AFP .

She would undergo a medical examination following the eight-hour flight from Amman, the capital of Jordan, he said.

"She was very cheerful," Isa said.

The Iraqi girl was flown to Kuala Lumpur to receive medical treatment at a private hospital.

The Malaysian government was firmly opposed to the US-led war in Iraq. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad warned it would anger Muslims and lead to more terrorism around the world.

Isa said the Chinese Maternity Hospital here had offered to operate o­n her free of charge and cover the expenses of her stay at the hospital. She may also be fitted with prosthetic limbs.

Accompanied by father

Yasmine, who is accompanied by her father, arrived late Monday aboard a Royal Jordanian Airlines flight.

Peace Malaysia had collected RM1.7 million to help Iraq war victims.

"We may sponsor more Iraqi children to receive medical treatment here or elsewhere," Isa said.

Yasmine's plight caught the attention of many Malaysians after her story was reported by Malaysian war journalists following a report o­n 12-year-old Iraqi boy Ali Ismail Abbas, who lost both arms and was orphaned in a US missile strike. - AFP
