PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat today denied that he had issued a challenge to the National Fatwa Council to a debate over several of his statements that were reported by the media lately.

"I do not know where this news came from. It could be that there are certain quarters who are trying to attain fame by spreading such news (that he (Nik Aziz) challenged the council to a debate)," he told reporters at his office here today.

The past few days local dailies had carried reports that Nik Aziz was willing to debate anyone including the council over statements he made.

The statements had not gone down well with the public with some claiming they could affect the faith of Muslims and cause disunity among them.

Kelantan Umno Veterans Council religious bureau chairman Assoc Prof Mohd Noor Deris had also taken Nik Aziz to task over the statements besides issuing a challenge to the latter to a debate over them.
