An assistant superintendent of police was charged in the Kangar Sessions Court today with two counts of accepting bribes

amounting to RM12,500.

Fifty-five-year-old Zulkifli Ahmad, who is with the general operations force based in Hulu Perak, pleaded not guilty.

He was charged with accepting RM5,000 from Sarkumar @ Shuhaimi Shafie at the parking area of Solehuddin Al Ayubi mosque at 8.25pm on Dec 9 2010 as an inducement to release cars used to smuggle petrol to Thailand.

He is also accused of accepting RM7,500 from Ismail Ramli at the same time and place to release cars smuggling petrol to Thailand.

Zulkifli was charged under the Anti-Corruption Commission of Malaysia Act 2009 which, under Section 24, carries a penalty of up to 20 years jail and a fine of RM10,000 or five times the value of the bribe, whichever is higher.

Judge Wan Norzanuar Wan Ahmad set bail at RM4,000 for each charge in one surety, and set March 14 for mention of the case.
